Best of Both Worlds Data Protection? Now it’s possible… with EMC ProtectPoint

Ashish Yanik

Senior Director of Product Management, Data Protection and Availability Division at EMC

When discussing the data protection continuum with customers, it’s clear that applications continue to push the limitations of data protection solutions today and customers are left to struggle with the gap between traditional backup and snapshot technologies to address their requirements.

To help customers bridge this gap, today we are announcing EMC ProtectPoint – a data protection offering that provides the best of both worlds – the performance of snapshots with the functionality of backups. ProtectPoint delivers up to 10x faster backup with direct backup from primary storage to protection storage, which takes application servers out of the backup path and eliminates the need for traditional backup infrastructure. Initially, ProtectPoint exclusively supports the all-new VMAX3 systems that EMC also announced today.

It’s Getting Better All the Time: EMC and Teradata Deliver Better Backup and Disaster Recovery

Anselmo Barrero

Director of Business Development, Data Protection & Availability Division at EMC

Teradata has unveiled new certified solutions that dramatically enhance backup, recovery and DR capabilities for Teradata Database users.  The new certifications are with EMC’s latest industry-leading Data Domain deduplication storage systems and Teradata’s latest Data Stream Architecture (DSA), delivering new data protection options through Teradata’s Backup Archive and Recovery (BAR) solution for its database customers.

The Teradata/EMC relationship itself is not entirely new.  Teradata already incorporates Data Domain systems as part of its Advocated BAR data protection offering. That said, the relationship is much deeper as Teradata also sells, optimizes and takes Level 1 support for Data Domain when it is sold as part of its BAR solution.

Teradata’s certification of the new Data Domain DD7200 is the latest in a series of recent advances by Teradata and EMC– specifically geared to deliver better data protection for Teradata Database customers.

A 1-2…3! Punch That Delivers Better Teradata Protection

Things got better for Teradata customers in October 2013 when Teradata announced its Data Stream Architecture (DSA), a new architecture designed to optimize data streaming from Teradata databases and increase performance of its BAR solution.  The DSA introduces features such as new stream layout and larger data blocks that improve Data Domain deduplication. Through close collaboration with EMC, Teradata also certified the Data Domain Operating System 5.4 in October 2013, and now the DD7200, bringing enormous backup performances improvements to customers.  The combination of the DSA architecture, the latest DD OS and the DD7200 protection storage system results in up to a 101% performance improvement over previous Data Domain-based Teradata BAR solution offerings.

As Chris Twogood, Vice President, Product and Services Marketing from Teradata, said, “Teradata and EMC are committed to providing the best backup solutions to our mutual customers.  This is why both companies engaged early on to complete certification of our latest respective technologies in concert with the release of Teradata’s new Data Stream Architecture. The combination of Teradata DSA with Data Domain is an effective and reliable backup and recovery solution for Teradata Databases and offers a fully automated and highly effective DR solution with network efficient replication.”Slide 1 JPG for Blog FF

Today, Teradata supports both the DD890 and the new DD7200.  To date, many petabytes of data from Teradata Databases are being protected by Data Domain systems sold by Teradata as part of BAR.

Innovation, Strategy and Vision: EMC a Leader in Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software, says Forrester

Steve Flynn

Director, Product Marketing, Backup Recovery Systems Division at EMC

Steve Jobs once said that “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”  At EMC we agree.  On July 10, we introduced a major data protection product line refresh that included game-changing innovation in product capabilities for our customers.  And today, we are proud to announce that EMC has been positioned as a ‘leader’ by Forrester Research, Inc. in its June 2013 report, “The Forrester Wave™: Enterprise Backup And Recovery Software, Q2 2013.”

Forrester evaluated six of the most significant backup software providers across a 61-criteria evaluation, and noted that EMC “leads the pack in the strategy section.”  EMC received the highest score possible for data reduction capabilities and scalability, and for continuity and restore features.  EMC tied for the highest score in platform support and also received the highest overall score for strategy – with top category ratings for strategic partnerships and customer satisfaction.

A Decade of Dedupe…and Data Domain

Caitlin Gordon

Senior Product Marketing Manager, Backup Recovery Systems Division at EMC

Latest posts by Caitlin Gordon (see all)

Just last month, Data Domain – and dedupe technology – officially crossed the 10-year mark.   It’s not often that a product or a technology completely reinvents an industry, but with over 33 million tapes replaced and 26 exabytes of data now protected by Data Domain systems, that’s just what Data Domain and EMC did to backup. In fact, last year Data Domain systems shipped with more capacity than in the first eight years combined, proving that customers are finding more value in these systems than ever before.

In early 2006, there were still only two vendors shipping deduplication products:  Data Domain and, interestingly enough, Avamar. Just a year later, over 20 vendors had jumped on the bandwagon offering various iterations of “deduplication” products. Some were, in fact, just data compression or “Single Instance Storage” (SIS) products, but the fact that everyone hung the deduplication label on their products showed how hot the technology had become.  Even if you really didn’t have a deduplication product to sell—you still at least had to have a deduplication story (sometimes it was just an explanation of why you couldn’t do it).  Customer adoption rates reflect exactly what was happening.

$2.1 Million in Savings and 40X Faster Backups – Fulton County Gets the Best of Both Worlds

Jen Sorenson

When it comes to data, is there anything that beats both savings and speed? What about saving $2.1 million and performing your backups at 40X faster than before? Now that’s truly the best of both worlds. Fulton County, the largest county in the state of Georgia, experienced this Daily Double combination when they decided to standardize on EMC FultonCountytechnologies including Avamar, Data Domain and  VMAX 20K.

With nearly a million residents and counting, in addition to 6,000 IT users in 45 organizations, Fulton County needed a top-notch backup and recovery infrastructure and simple management of their data protection environment. The amount of technology used by the county’s courthouses, health and human services, libraries, public safety, water resources and emergency management agencies is simply staggering.
